The Most Amazing Oklahoma Vacation

Oklahoma is not a place that will pop up when you are looking for popular vacation destinations. Maybe because Oklahoma is nothing but flat barren land, right? Absolutely wrong!  Well, it does have flat land, but also mountains.

Funny thing, In the southwest corner, the Wichita Mountains overlook prairie land. This combination is what make Southwest Oklahoma an amazing vacation spot.

My husband and I spent several days exploring Southern Oklahoma and it was one of our favorite vacations. It is the perfect vacation for families with kids, couples, or solos. A “nature at its best” vacation for sure!

I am sharing tips in my travel guide for the areas we explored and I am sure you will love it.  This guide will make your trip planning easy, save you weeks of searching online, and tell you about spots you don’t want to miss.

 What the guide includes:

Where to see bison, deer, elk, wild longhorns, and prairie dogs in the wild. You don’t even have to get out of your automobile to get up close and personal with these animals. They are roaming everywhere in certain areas!

  • Many beautiful lakes and creeks to explore – all clear water and clean
  • Great places to watch sunsets
  • A very unique secret place that only locals know about
  • A cool place with a riverwalk, waterfalls, and unique buildings and shops
  • The Holy City
  • The best mountain views
  • Food
  • Several unique places to stay to ensure your vacation is unforgettable!
  • In season and off season

Visitors Guide Turner Falls Park

Turner Falls Park is a family friendly park located along Honey Creek in the Arbuckle Mountains of south-central Oklahoma.

The highlights are 77-ft. waterfall, natural swimming pool, a blue hole, a spring feed creek, caves, and an old rock castle.

As you are headed to the park, there will be a zipline at the top of the hill. Stop and walk to the overlook situated to the right side of the building. It is the best view of Turner Falls!

This is also where the Love Lock Fence overlooking the falls is located.

It was a little confusing for us, so I'm going to try to explain.

There are three areas of parking.

Level 3:

·         The first one you will come to

·         Closest to the blue hole

·         Free parking all the time

Level 2:

·         Good for swimming in the river between the blue hole and the falls

·         Cost $10 for parking during busy times

Level 3:

·         Closest to the falls and castle

·         Cost $20 for parking during busy times

I’m still not clear on the cost for parking or the actual cost for admission. We were charged $8 per person and parking was free. I think we were off season and during the week is why it was that prince.

Their website says $16 per person and $10 & $20 for parking.

They also have camping spaces and cabins to rent for staying overnight. The cabins are $150 a night.

No pets are allowed in the park.

The castle is located on the right of the walkway on the way to the falls. It is up a steep hill. If you are able, go ahead and climb the steps. It is worth it!

The biggest complaint I hear about this place is the cost to get in and crowding in the summer. I agree it would be costly if you have a large family at $16 dollars a person plus parking. If you are stopping by on a vacation, it would be worth it. It is a pretty neat place to see although it does need a little maintenance!

Oklahoma's Holy City

The last thing you would expect to see in the middle of nowhere in Oklahoma, is an ancient looking city made of stone with a stunning backdrop of mountains.

Located in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge near Medicine Park, the Holy City was built in the 1930’s to resemble Old Jerusalem and serve as a venue for "The Prince of Peace" passion play. The performance is still held yearly on Easter morning.

The structures, made of locally quarried granite and stone, became a permeant venue in 1934.

The historic chapel on site contains murals painted by Irene Malcolm in 1945. It has been the host to many weddings and continues to be a popular venue today.
